Federal and Provincial Funding Provides for Wastewater Treatment System Upgrading and Desludging

The Town of Princeton is very pleased to announce, in partnership with the Federal and Provincial governments, that we have received grant funding for, and will commence with, upgrading and desludging of the Town’s wastewater treatment system.

The Town applied for the funding under the “Clean Water Wastewater Fund” Program which was launched in September of 2016 to help accelerate the rehabilitation of water, wastewater, and storm water infrastructure in communities across British Columbia. Cost of the project is $1,063,000. shared between the Federal Government (50%), the Provincial Government (33%) and the Town (17%).  The funding amount from the Federal Government is $531,500, and the Provincial Government is $350,790 with the Town of Princeton’s portion being $180,710.  The Town’s share of the project funding will come from reserves.

The upgrades involve constructing a permanent bypass system for the aerated lagoons and to address vegetation intrusion on the slopes of the lagoon berms.  Both of these upgrades will address system deficiencies, thereby simplifying future options and maintenance requirements for the Town of Princeton.

Desludging will comprise of: removal of the aeration system in Cell No. 1, draining of liquid components from Cell No. 1 to Cell No. 2, pumping of sludge from Cell No. 1 to dewatering system which will be located in the adjacent abandoned tailings ponds area, and re-installation of the aeration system.

The proposed upgrades will not only enhance the level of service to the community and increase the detention capacity of the Town’s aerated treatment lagoons, but also result in less odors being emitted from the sewage treatment system.  This project represents a significant investment in the future of our community.
