Assistance for People Impacted by the 2021 B.C. Floods and Extreme Weather Events

Personalized support during recovery

The Canadian Red Cross is meeting with people impacted by the 2021 B.C. floods and extreme weather event to understand unique needs and support in the following ways:

     ✓ Assess personal situations and explain the recovery supports available

     ✓ Assist in navigating the recovery process and making informed decisions for personal recovery plans and efforts

     ✓ Identify next steps and prioritize the actions to be taken

     ✓ Support with forms and processes (sorting papers, obtaining a permit from the municipality, etc.)

     ✓ Suggest referrals to other services and provide connections, where needed (legal advice, financial advice, mental health and psychosocial supports, etc.)

     ✓ Provide financial assistance to access mental health services

     ✓ Provide emotional support

Interim Housing

Starting in February 2022, on behalf of the Province of British Columbia, the Canadian Red Cross will assist people through personalized recovery support who have been unable to return home due to the 2021 B.C. floods and extreme weather events that began on November 14, 2021.

The Red Cross is contacting people from eligible households who are currently receiving ESS assistance to assess their unique needs and discuss next steps around interim housing.

Housing repair and reconstruction

As part of its personalized support for recovery, the Canadian Red Cross is also working with people who have been unable to return home following the 2021 B.C. floods and extreme weather event through housing repair and reconstruction support.

People who have been unable to return home may receive financial support to help:

     ✓ Meet the immediate needs for their household

     ✓ Clean up their home and property

     ✓ Assist with expenses related to the repair or rebuilding of their home

     ✓ Assist with expenses related to moving to a new location

A private and confidential appointment will be arranged with your family representative. Assistance is determined on a case-by-case basis and is not intended to duplicate insurance coverage or other assistance programs.
